REAL FOOD - are you taking the challenge?

"Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine thy food" ~ Hippocrates

I'm beginning this update with a quote found in "The Vintage Remedies Guide to: REAL FOOD" by Jessie Hawkins. This is Jessie's latest book and just when I think the next one cannot get any better, it does! If you are not familiar with Vintage Remedies take some time to browse their website and check out all the resources they have to offer!

We were on week three of our Farmers Market Grocery real food challenge but took a temporary hiatus due to being out of town and since I was unable to make today's market I'm anxiously awaiting Saturday's. We had a limited supply of market items left from our last trip so we have eaten out twice since returning home. And you know what? I feel TERRIBLE tonight! During this grocery challenge I have incorporated a few other things (detox along with super probiotics, regular chiropractic care, coconut oil in my smoothies and on my skin, plus added a few supplements and stopped one medication). I have lost some weight and have been feeling great! The detox took it's toll the first week and brought on a case of strep, still fighting off the cough, but overall I have felt great with these new changes. Despite the cheese pizza, tomorrow is a new day and with it comes a second chance with a new beginning! So if you are on your way to eating real foods and cutting out the bad, don't beat yourself up for the occasional slip! Every little change we make and practice will eventually become a way of life and the next will build upon it until we no longer remember our lives before them!

There is so much to write about that I've decided it needs to be done in multiple posts. I want to share with you what we have done in our home and provide some resources needed to guide you through these same changes. Being a baker, mommy and wife I have a lot of responsibility. Not only with meal planning and baking ingredients but it goes even further including our pest control. Some families can make several changes at once but I realize some need to start with one or two and gradually incorporate the next. So I'll begin with the basics.

By now you are probably wondering why on earth I've ventured into this type of writing on a baking blog? Well for several reasons. One I'm writing about whatever I want because it's my blog and I can : ) Secondly because clean eating, prevention, local food, our environment and healthy choices are very important to me. Finally I bake. I bake because it relaxes me, I love to feed people and I want to give my family a healthier option when it comes to sweets. I want the desserts created by Pink Sugar Bowl to be an alternative to other not so good for you sweets. It bewilders me that people will eat healthy foods and then when it comes to their desserts not even think twice about 4 inches of icing made with artificial colorings and preservatives. We will always carry traditional whoopie pies because they are a part of us and our family history. But our breakfast "cookies" and other desserts are made with our health, and yours, in mind.

For making it through this novel of a blog entry we'll end with a giveaway! How would you like a copy of Jessie Hawkins "Real Food" book? Post a comment here and I'll hold the drawing Sunday! In addition to Jessie's book we have received additional generous donations for this giveaway!
